As a member of Biographers International Organization since 2010, Barbara Lehman Smith has served on its Plutarch committee, which helps select BIO's most prestigious award. With more than twenty five years as a journalist, feature writer, marketing specialist, and biographer, her articles, essays, and profiles have been featured in various publications including Fine Art Connoisseur, AVALON, and Pennsylvania Heritage. Corporate marketing clients of Smith Publications, LLC, include Bunch of Grapes Author Series on Martha's Vineyard, St. Joseph Medical Center, and the Archdiocese of Baltimore. As adjunct faculty for Goucher College in Towson, MD, she also taught a writing & graphic design class for eight years.
Barbara is currently completing work on her debut novel, The Magic of Dead Things. She got the idea of mixing biography of lesser known subjects with fictional biographers working on their stories after the publication of the book, Elizabeth Sparhawk-Jones: The Artist Who Lived Twice. During interviews and author talks, Barbara found a strong interest in the behind-the-scenes discoveries and processes of the writer from the reading community, and her continuing involvement with literary events for other authors on Martha's Vineyard confirmed this belief. She hopes the hybrid genre of her novel frames biography in a way that's inviting to readers.
Raised in Canton, Massachusetts, she earned her M.A. from the University of Baltimore, and B.A. from the University of Maryland, College Park. A mother of three (Adam, Carter & Kelly), she lives in Baltimore, Maryland, and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts along with her husband, Chris, and dog, Penny.
